In an attempt to imagine a different world, Chest brings us closer to the collapse as a common ground from which new creatures can emerge. Creating hybrids that are not cars, but creatures simultaneously moving and being moved, embodying the myriad properties of protagonists, landscape, and atmosphere.
Chest is a choreography at the intersection of ecology, animality, and masculinity. It folds practices around seeming binaries such as hard and soft, flaccid and erect, hairy and bald, into contradictory landscapes, switching between atmosphere and personhood in trying out ways of being nature to each other.
Chest is the third part of Nyberg’s investigation of the assholeness of (hu)mankind, as previously developed in Sweet (MDT 2022) and The Dawn Chorus (Norrdans 2022).
”Masculine identities, and the White patriarchal orders that they often support, are important for understanding (the lack of) political responses to climate change, especially in the global North.” (Cara Daggett "Green-ing masculinity?").
An original music score will be developed and created in collaboration with the guitarist Kaki King. King is one of the world’s most renown female guitar player, with a career of six LP and two EP and several compositions for TV and film. She is known for her percussive and contemplative compositions, energetic live shows, and a diverse range in genres. This is her first composition made for dance. Starting from a joint studio practice with Stina the music develops throughout the artistic process, enveloping researches, dramaturgies and ideas to its composition. Their aim is to create a cinematic landscape: a narrative affective air to juxtapose a practice based dance. In the live performance, the music can be performed live by Kaki King or recorded.
To guide the artistic process, the choreographer Andros Zins-Browne joins the creation. Andros and Stina have been collaborating in a series of works, taking on different roles in each other's joint processes. For Chest, Andros will be part of the artistic creation as a conversation partner, practice builder, outside eye and inside support.
Holding the hand of the process are producers Terry Johnson (Johnson & Bergsmark) and Magnus Nordberg (Nordberg Movement), who have been collaborating with Stina Nyberg for almost a decade.
